Why does Data need to be protected?

Privacy data must be protected or else there will be frauds resulting in the loss of personal information and other important data collection, bank accounts as an example. In business, the protection of data storage is very important for organizations to secure their key pieces of information, including employee backgrounds, collection of clients’ and customers’ information, loyalty programs, financial reports and transactions, or data collection (FSB, 2020). Data Privacy Act was initiated in line with Data Privacy Day in order to help individuals and businesses to prevent the third party from violating the data and privacy of the organizations as that can assist the businesses to accuse the third party for scamming, causing fraudulent act and other hacking activities (FSB, 2020).

Let’s Celebrate Data Privacy Day!

In this era of globalization, technology has played a significant role in creating new possibilities for human beings’ daily activities. People are likely to be unfamiliar with the disadvantages of technology. Individuals tend to forget to consider the outcomes of the risk of how technology violating their personal data and privacy. In this regard, the Council of Europe decided to initiate “Data Privacy Day”, which is a joint action taken by both national and international individuals and businesses to learn and respect the value of privacy as well as protecting and updating their data (NCSA, 2020).

Data Privacy Day was initiated on January 28, 1981, under Convention 108, to educate people about privacy and data protection (NCSA, 2020). Raising awareness of privacy protection is significant for business organizations and online users around the globe. To celebrate the day, government, parliaments and national data protection bodies work together to host campaigns in either general public or educational projects and that has helped people to generally aware of the rights to protect privacy (Council of Europe, 2020).

Data Privacy Day was officially led by the National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA) as a privacy awareness campaign. The campaign is celebrated annually consisting of integral components, including STOP, THINK and CONNECT. With the core efforts of initiating this privacy day, NCSA fully encouraged people to get involved in the campaign from anywhere, either at home, at work, at school, or in the community. Furthermore, NCSA provides a library of free materials, tools and information that can be used to educate people worldwide (NCSA, 2020).

You can contribute to this privacy learning by:

  1. At home:
    • Encouraging your family members and friends to safeguard their private data, gaming and other social media platforms
  2. At work:
    • Encouraging your co-workers or employers to learn more about cyber security as well as handing out newsletters, guideline or handbooks about the company’s IT security
    • Restricting access to staff’s email accounts, and online access to other types of platforms
  3. At school:
    •  Working on privacy and security implications to secure internet usage within the school on a daily basis, especially promoting Data Privacy Day to administrations and students
  4. In the community:
    • Providing privacy tips and security practices to citizens
    • Hosting a cyber security event to educate people about their online usage, including social media, websites and other networks
